Abstract

An ecological survey of Sarus Crane (Grus Antigone) was carried out for a period of two years in Etawah District, Uttar Pradesh to determine their distribution, demography and conservation status.  A total of 136 adults and 17 juveniles were counted during the first survey and 144 adults and 12 juveniles were counted during the second survey.  Most of them were found to occupy areas with large natural wetlands and adjoining crop fields.  Breeding pairs and juveniles contributed a fractrion of the population.  Several factors affecting the breeding and distribution of the cranes and their implication on the conservation of the species are also discussed.
